Trauma
Trauma is generically defined a deeply distressing or disturbing experience that causes severe emotional shock which can potentially led to long-lasting psychological damage. It is an emotional response triggered by a terrifying or life-threatening event, such as an accident, natural disaster, physical or emotional abuse, neglect, violence, or the death of a loved one.
The key aspects of trauma include but are not restricted to:
An extremely stressful, frightening or disturbing event or series of events. A sense of intense fear, horror, helplessness or threat to one' safety and well-being during the event(s).

Lasting adverse effects on the individual's mental, physical, social, emotional and spiritual functioning after the event(s). Common reactions include shock, denial, unpredictable emotions, flashbacks, strained relationships, and even physical symptoms like headaches or nausea.
Trauma is a normal reaction to abnormal circumstances but, some individuals will have difficulty recovering and may develop trauma-related disorders if the trauma is left unaddressed.
