Loneliness

Often seen as an unpleasant emotional state characterised by a deep feeling of emptiness, isolation and lack of companionship or meaningful connections with others. Some of the key characteristics of loneliness include: Having real or imagined lack of social connection and intimacy Feelings of being alone, unwanted or cut off from others A lack of meaningful relationships or social networks

The Cambridge Dictionary defines loneliness simply as the state of being lonely, which captures the internal, emotional nature of the experience. Loneliness is often described as a type of "social pain" that motivates people to seek social connections. It is an unpleasant, subjective feeling rather than
being defined by being alone or isolated objectively.

There are two main types of loneliness:
Emotional loneliness - Feeling a lack of close, intimate connections or attachments, such as with a romantic partner or close family.

Social loneliness - Feeling a lack of a wider network or group of friends, companions or community.

Loneliness can be transient (therefore temporary) or chronic (long lasting). Chronic loneliness in particular is associated with numerous negative physical and mental health impacts. In essence, loneliness is a subjective experience leading to a distressing emotional state. It is more than just simply being alone.
